Before yesterday, no runner from Hudson County had taken home gold at the Meet of Champions for as long as anyone can remember. Najee Glass of St. Peter’s Prep and Zamir Thomas of Snyder put an end to the draught as they both won in yesterday’s historic performance at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.

MONTCLAIR – As the North Bergen softball team walked off the field following a 2-1 loss to Montclair in the second round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group IV tournament, it was already time to put this game in the rearview mirror.
With another tournament game – this one a semifinal matchup in the Hudson County Tournament – less than 24 hours away, the Bruins have little choice but to exhibit a short memory on the diamond. NORTH BERGEN – Pitcher Angel Paulino has been the driving force behind St. Mary’s success throughout the season. When it came time for Paulino’s teammates to help pick up the slack in the biggest game of the season, they showed they weren’t a one-man team.

SECAUCUS - The HCTCA Championships kicked off yesterday with the field events with the Dickinson boys and Bayonne girls taking early control at the top of the leader boards.
The Rams had a stranglehold on the jumping events, taking first place in both the high and long jumps. Junior Jose Veras took the high jump crown with a leap of 6’6” and Terrol Ishmail’s jump of 19’3.5” was tops in the long jump. The Snyder track team won two events in yesterday’s Bernards Invitational in Bernardsville.
Junior Zamir Thomas set the tone for the Tigers, winning the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 21.47 seconds. He was also the front leg of Snyder’s winning 4x100 Meter Relay team. NORTH BERGEN – Bruins pitcher Carla Arismendi has plenty of pitches at her disposal when she’s steps into the circle. For most of yesterday’s showdown against High Tech she only needed one – her fastball.

SECAUCUS - Yesterday's second stage of the Patriot Invitational was certainly a memorable one for the Dickinson boys track team. The Rams took home three first place finishes in the seven events for the boys. NORTH BERGEN – For the Bruins softball team, this is an opportunity that rarely comes along. Returning eight starters is a luxury any coach would love to have. With eight starters coming back from a team which went 23-4 a year ago, head coach Tom Eagleson was hard-pressed to remember having a team with this combination of talent and experience.

JERSEY CITY – Throughout the season, North Bergen’s Noel Allen has shown the ability to take over a game on offense. In last night’s Hudson County Tournament semifinal, the 6-foot-5 senior forward picked an ideal time to dominate.

NORTH BERGEN – For Noel Allen and Dany Abrue, it had to be painful to watch. Both sidelined midway through the first quarter with foul trouble, the two Bruin standouts had to sit as an early North Bergen lead quickly morphed into a seven-point deficit at the half.

KEARNY – In a wild game between North Bergen and Kearny in the quarterfinals of the Hudson County Tournament, it only seemed appropriate that the ending would be bizarre as well. In this case, it is an ending that has yet to truly be determined.
Playing in heavy rain for most of the contest, play was halted with around 19 minutes left in the second half due to lightning. After a roughly 45-minute delay, play was suspended with the storm still going and large puddles on top of the turf at Kearny Stadium.

Royster didn’t get many touches, but when he did, he took advantage of them as the Marauders cruised past North Bergen 49-16 at Caven Point.

UNION CITY – After last week’s tough defeat to Teaneck, North Bergen was looking to bounce back and send a message. Through an array of blitzes and pressure, the message was sent loud and clear, as the Bruins used a dominant defensive performance to shut out Union City 14-0 last night at Roosevelt Stadium.
“That’s the whole thing about the Bruins,” Quarterback Peter Ramanand said. “Our defense just comes harder and that gets the offense to come out fired up and score points.”

NORTH BERGEN – Winning had become a given in North Bergen under long-time head coach Vin Ascolese. But that run of success, including 21 straight trips to the state playoffs, came to an end as injuries and inexperience contributed to a disappointing 3-7 campaign.
“I think that they felt that they let everyone who played here down,” Ascolese said. “It hurt. We won the last game of the season and we were happy about that, but it still didn’t take away the idea that we didn’t make the playoffs and we didn’t have a winning season.
