SECAUCUS - The HCTCA Championships kicked off yesterday with the field events with the Dickinson boys and Bayonne girls taking early control at the top of the leader boards.
The Rams had a stranglehold on the jumping events, taking first place in both the high and long jumps. Junior Jose Veras took the high jump crown with a leap of 6’6” and Terrol Ishmail’s jump of 19’3.5” was tops in the long jump. JERSEY CITY - The past and future of Hudson County boys tennis were on display in the first singles final showdown between Memorial’s David Garzon and Secaucus’ Joshua Halpern.
Garzon’s high school career may be winding down, but yesterday, he wasn’t yet ready to relinquish his crown as the county’s premier player. The Tigers senior overcame a rough second set and a hamstring injury to win his fourth consecutive title with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Halpern in the championships of the Hudson County Tournament at Saint Peter’s College. BAYONNE – As the number two starting pitcher on the County Prep staff, sophomore Victoria Pessolano hadn’t been asked to take the ball in pressure situations.
Head coach Meave Connelly gave Pessolano her first real test in the circle and she proved up to the challenge. Pessolano struck out 12 batters in a complete-game performance to lift the Hurricanes past division rival Memorial 10-2 yesterday at Bayonne Park.
