BAYONNE – Gabriella Gerace can remember the excitement of when Bayonne won a HCIAA title during her sophomore. Now a senior and a year removed from a semifinals defeat in the Hudson County Tournament, Gerace and the Bees are determined to make their way back to the top in the county.

“It would be great,” Gerace said. “That’s exactly what we’re pushing for. We’re definitely going to get it this year I feel it.”

After playing together during club volleyball season, Bayonne has hit the ground running to start the year. They improved to 2-0 on the young season after handling Ferris 25-7, 25-6 yesterday.

“It really is important just to get off to a good start,” Bayonne head coach Pat Longo said. “Its new faces. It’s a matter of blending and getting some chemistry together and working together as a team.”

That chemistry was in full force as they set the tone against a short-handed Bulldogs (1-2) midway through the opening game and never looked back.

The Bees ended the game on a 16-1 run behind three kills from Gerace and four aces from Franchely Inoa. Gerace’s momentum continued as she recorded 13 service points and eight aces to start the second game.

The middle hitter would finish with match-highs in service points (15), aces (nine) and kills (six) in the win. She has also made her presence felt as a leader of a Bayonne team with three new starters in 2010.

“She’s a senior and she knows this is her last season,” Longo said. This is her last hurrah so she wants to work hard, she wants to do well and knows it’s important to show leadership on the court.”

“I’ve always looked up to the seniors and to take their place now this year I feel like I’m doing the right thing and helping others,” said Gerace about her new responsibilities.

Krissia Bernardino, another senior returning starter, added 14 assists, six service points and two aces in the win.  Tonia Ford and sophomore Amanda Borges added five and four kills respectively. Megan Mahan chipped in with three aces.
