Last year, the County Prep girls tennis team went undefeated in county play, only to be stunned by McNair in the HCIAA Seglio final. This year, the Hurricanes made sure that history would not repeat itself when they swept Kearny 5-0 to win the Hudson County Girls Tennis Tournament on Monday.
“This was a very big win after last year,” County Prep head coach Gunter Pelipada said. “(Last year) was definitely a painful defeat, especially for those who were returning players.”
Four players on this year’s Hurricanes squad - Angelika Dabu, Agnes Bangayan, Stephanie Malabag and Marian Rosado were in last year’s final.
County Prep squeaked by Secaucus 3-2 to make it to the finals, setting up the showdown with Kearny, which was previously unbeaten in the county. Monday’s convincing performance was so impressive that even Pelipada was taken by surprise at the final score.
“It was a perfect match for the seniors that are leaving to go out on,” he said. “I thought it would be a close match against Kearny.”
The Hurricanes lose four players to graduation, most notably Dabu. A two-time HCIAA champion in singles play, Dabu has yet to lose a game in the county this season. Bangayan, Rosado and Kathy Perez are also seniors.
For Dabu and Bangayan, there is still one match left for them this season. Dabu will face Union City’s Gabriela Sarrate in the final of Hudson County First Singles Championship on Thursday. In the Second Singles Championship, Bangayan will meet Daisey Crego of McNair.

County Prep's Agnes Bangayan will compete in Thursday's Second Singles final.
