BAYONNE – Few freshmen have the talent and the poise to make an immediate impact on the varsity level. For Holy Family's Marissa Dundas, she only needed two games to emerge as one of the area's top scoring threats.

Dundas scored twice in a span of 90 seconds en route to her first career hat trick as the Falcons topped Memorial 4-1 yesterday at Veterans Stadium.

“At this point I’d say youth be served,” Holy Family head coach Mary Borrello-Cerreta said “If they want to take charge, let them. We would never discourage anybody from taking charge on the field if its going to net such positive results. I’m just glad I was here to see it. It was quite impressive.”

The biggest statement came from Dundas in just her second career game. She put the Falcons (2-0) on the scoreboard in the 10th minute with a goal in front of the net off a Samantha Sysak throw-in. Moments later, Dundas would strike again with a shot from 15-yards out that went over the head of Memorial keep Tania Quito for her second goal of the game.

Dundas, one of two freshmen starting for Holy Family along with midfielder Amelia Attisano, completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.

Even though the season has just started the skills and fearlessness of Dundas and Attisano on the field has been an eye-opener for their teammates.

“It’s amazing. I didn’t think they’d be that aggressive,” Sysak said. “They don’t have any fear. They don’t care if they have to go after 50-50 balls. They’re not afraid to score. They’re not afraid to take charge if they have to, even if they’re freshmen.”

“Sometimes I’m so aggressive I end up on my butt,” Dundas said about her aggressive style on the field. “But I’m getting used to it now. It’s a different style (at high school).”

Sysak, a four-year starter who was asked to be a scoring threat right away, knows the challenges in front of them. As daunting as the task may seem, she has little doubt they’ll be able to handle it.

“It is a big responsibility, but I can see that they can take the responsibility,” Sysak said. “They have that responsibility and they can do it. It’s not a problem for them.”

Attisano and Dundas already had good on-field chemistry when they entered Holy Family after playing together with the Bayonne Lightning youth team since they were each 7-years-old. That bond has also proven beneficial as they adjust to the challenges of a new level of play and fitting in with their new teammates.

“(We) just stick together,” Dundas said. “It would be horrible if there was just one freshman on the team.”

Junior Kaydee Murphy added a goal and an assist for the Falcons in the victory. JacqueLyn only had to make two saves in net thanks to a stingy Holy Family defense.

The Tigers (0-1) broke through in the 69th minute when Genesis Benitez scored off a throw-in from Karla Calderon. Quito, a senior, made 16 saves to keep her team in the game.
