What all six winners in the first round of the Hudson County Girls Soccer Tournament had in common can be summed up in one number – zero. All six teams advanced to the second round behind shutout performances from their defenses.
Those defenses will need to remain strong on Saturday with a collection of scorers headlined by Samantha Pace (Kearny), Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne), Carla Calderon (Memorial), Samantha Pagano (Holy Family), Lauren Tredo (St. Dominic) and Jessica Melendez (McNair).
This weekend’s slate of games is headlined by the battle of the Peninsula City between No. 3 seed Holy Family and No. 6 seed Bayonne. In the previous four years, these two teams met in the final of the old HCIAA championships.
The winners in this round will advance to Wednesday’s semifinals at Caven Point.
