The Snyder girls basketball team took many by surprise after winning 17 games a season ago. That type of success ensures that the Tigers won’t be able to sneak up on teams in 2010/11 and brings expectations to a program which hasn’t had many in the past.

Even with the added pressure on its shoulders, Snyder enters the season with a greater motivation.

“The girls are definitely more focuses and entered with an attitude on the court,” head coach Chris Grant said. “Anything short of a run in the state and county tournaments would be a disappointment.”

Grant and the Tigers have plenty of reasons to be optimistic with Tamara Tyre at the point. The 5-foot-7 junior has shown the ability to score points in bunches and uses her speed to ignite Snyder’s up-tempo style.

“There’s very little she can’t do on the court,” Grant said. “She has speed, is aggressive and has good on-ball defense. She’s out to prove that she’s the best player in the county.

“We’re faster and quicker than we were last year with Tyre at the point.”

Shareese Francis, a junior returning starter, and 5-foot-0 gunner Naquilla Bowens join Tyre in what could be an explosive backcourt.

While speed and aggressiveness are the strengths of the team, senior forward Princess LaRoche gives the Tigers an inside presence to complement Tyre from the perimeter. Six-foot-one senior center Fantasia Mickens rounds out the starting five.

Grant will rely on a pair of sophomores as his top reserves off the bench in Rashida Washington and Brenda Williams.
