Andrea Innis’ free throw with nine seconds left proved to be the difference as the second-seeded Patriots held on for a thrilling win in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group I tournament last night in Secaucus.

Secaucus (20-4) stopped a drive by Bloomfield Tech’s Charmaine Tay with one second left in the game to preserve the victory and knock off the defending Group I champions.

Tay, a second-team all-state player a year ago, scored a team-high 17 points in her first game since Jan. 19 due to injury. The Louisville-bound senior scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to give the 15th-seeded Spartans (5-20) the lead with 1:30 left after trailing by 12 points after three quarters.

Trailing by two, the Patriots regained the lead with about a minute left after a steal and old-fashioned three-point play by Shannon Waters.

Waters finished with 14 points for Secaucus. Innis led all scorers with 21 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Ariana Simon added eight points and seven rebounds as the Patriots advance to face High Tech in the second round on Wednesday.

Kianna Mayers scored 13 points for Bloomfield Tech in defeat.

High Tech 58, North 13th Street Tech 56

The Lasercats had a pair of late comebacks before pulling away in the second-overtime to win an epic double-overtime contest in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 1 tournament yesterday in North Bergen.

Sophomore Briana Guzman, who had a career-high 15 points and 12 rebounds for seventh-seeded High Tech (17-10), sent the game into overtime with a bucket late in the fourth.

The Lasercats would force a second overtime on a Natalie Classen steal and basket with nine seconds left for her only points on the game.

High Tech sophomore Sybil Lynch buried a trio of 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 21 points. Teammate Kristina Rivera hit two treys of her to finish with 19 points. With the win, the Lasercats will face second-seeded Secaucus in the second round on Wednesday.

Crystal Torres led the 10th-seeded Cougars (12-10) with 19 points and Ukeca Harris added 18 points in defeat.
