JERSEY CITY – First-year head coach Nick Fargo knows his High Tech team has dealt with its shares of challenges. Injuries have decimated the Lasercats’ depth, and a lack of size was painfully obvious on the boards in their division matchup against Snyder.
What High Tech certainly has though are speed and resilience. Those two qualities proved to be the deciding factors as the Lasercats defeated the Tigers 63-57 yesterday to snap Snyder’s 15-game winning streak.
“We’re outsized in every game we play,” High Tech coach Nick Fargo said. “We play hard and we run. We don’t stop running until the game’s over.
“They hung in there. They played hard. At the end of the game we needed to make the plays and they did.”
High Tech (12-9) had seen a 13-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate when the Tigers’ Jasmine Hatcher tied the game with 1:12 left.
Knocked down, but not out, the Lasercats regained the lead when Sybil Lynch fed Briana Guzman (13 points) for an easy basket with 55 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Lynch capped off a career-performance when she picked up a loose ball at mid-court, raced towards the hoop for a layup while being fouled on the play.
Lynch would complete the old-fashion three-point play to increase the lead to five points and put the game out of reach.
“Sybil’s been steady all year long, but not like tonight,” Fargo said. “Tonight she just took over. There were times when she took over the game, attacked the basket and finished her layups. She did a great job.”
Lynch’s speed was on display throughout the contest. The sophomore had a career-high seven steals and was often a one-woman fast break once the ball was in her hands.
“She has a great feel for the ball,” Fargo said. “She sees it, she gets out there quick. Plus no one can catch her. She’s the fastest player on the team and you can’t catch her.”
“(Lynch) gave us trouble the first game,” Snyder coach Chris Grant added. “She’s the fastest player we’ve seen.”
Lynch had nine points on fast breaks created off her own rebounds or steals she had forced.
In addition to punishing the Tigers (16-4), Lynch also drained a pair of 3-pointers to finish a career-high 27 points).
“Sometimes it’s a mixture of all (of them),” Lynch said about the strongest part of her game. “It’s not just one thing.
“I tried everything (yesterday), my speed, my dribbling skills, shooting. I’d say everything (was working).”
Trailing 29-28 midway through the third, High Tech had seemingly broken the game wide open when they went on a 21-7 run. Lynch scored nine points during the near seven-minute stretch, including a 3-pointer that made it 49-36 with just 7:06 left in the game.
Snyder would not go down quietly. Junior Tamara Tyre scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. Five of those points came in a 90-second stretch where the Tigers scored nine straight to tie the game at 55-all.
Byre led all scorers with 34 points in defeat and also had nine rebounds and five steals in defeat. Kadecha Everett (14), Hatcher (10) and Princess LaRoche (10) all had double figures in rebounding as Snyder used its size advantage to dominate on the glass.
Just one year removed from a 5-18 season, the Tigers have had one of the state’s biggest turnarounds this season. While they suffered their first defeat since around Christmas, Grant believes this will prove to be a positive for his young squad.
“I think this is a big wake-up call for us,” he said. “I think it’s what we needed. I don’t want to lose, but I think this is what we needed heading into the tournament. We were flying too high and getting ahead of ourselves.”

Tamara Tyre erupted for 34 points for Snyder in defeat.
