He initially put on a North Carolina hat. But instead of going to play for the Tar Heels, Huggins removed the cap after about 10 seconds and revealed his choice with a Rutgers hat underneath in front of a full crowd at the St. Peter’s Prep library which included dozens of his Marauder teammates and some of his future Scarlet Knights teammates. EAST RUTHERFORD – In what had been a storybook season for the Lincoln Lions, a 21-8 loss to New Providence in the NJSIAA North 2, Group I title game was not the fairytale ending they had in mind.

With the loss of 26 seniors from the squad, some may feel that yesterday’s defeat at the New Meadowlands Stadium marked the end of an era of resurgence at Lincoln. Many of the core pieces from a Lions squad which has made the state playoffs three-straight years will have to be replaced, but to head coach Robert Hampton the final chapter of this story has yet to be written. JERSEY CITY – On the backs of the shirts given to Lincoln’s offensive linemen the message was simple - “Brotherhood. Loyalty, Commitment, Strength.”

But for the Lions’ quintet of Shavell Daniels, Dwayne Larkin, Jeremiah Pequerro, Jesse Taylor and Paris Williams, it’s more than just a slogan, it’s a reality. As Lincoln enters Saturday's NJSIAA North 2, Group I title game against New Providence, that bond has allowed what was once considered a weakness of the team to become a strength.

Ready to go

Savon Huggins, St. Peter's Prep

St. Peter's Prep senior Savon Huggins enters 2010 as the state's top running back.

Plenty has changed across the high school football landscape in Hudson County since the end of last season. For the second consecutive year, realignment has radically altered the schedules of many teams. Six teams have changed head coaches and for the first time in nearly a century, Dickinson will not field a football team.

But as the 2010 season is about to kick off one thing that has remained the same is the dominance of St. Peter’s Prep. The Marauders enter the year in the eyes of many, as the top program in the state. With a loaded roster highlighted by seniors Savon Huggins, Keith Lumpkin and Sheldon Royster, this may be the most talented group Prep has had in a while.

The Marauders are hardly the only big story as the season begins. Playoff mainstays Hoboken, Hudson Catholic and Bayonne look to bounce back after combining to win just six games in 2009. After reaching the playoffs last year, North Bergen and division rivals Lincoln and St. Anthony look to make the next step towards a state championship. These are just some of the storylines entering the 2010 high school football season in Hudson County.
