HCIAL coaches make their end-of-season picks

The HCIAL coaches made their selections for All-League honors on Wednesday night for the football season.

In the HCIAL Red Division, North Bergen's Vin Ascolese and St. Peter's Prep's Brandon Napoleon earned Co-Players of the Year honors.

Ascolese, the Bruins' hard-hitting linebacker also took home the division's Defensive Player of the Year award thanks to a season, which has seen him record 127 tackles, 9.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and two interceptions. The senior also added 505 rushing yards and three touchdowns to help lead North Bergen to the NJSIAA North 1, Group IV championship game this Saturday against Montclair.

Napoleon excelled on both sides of the ball for the Marauders. The West Virginia-bound quarterback has thrown for 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns and has rushed for five touchdowns. He also added an interception this year at cornerback.

Prep's Jared Crayton was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year by the league's coaches after rushing for 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns. The senior back had 18 touchdowns overall for the Marauders.

Legendary head coach Vincent Ascolese was selected as the Red Division's Coach of the Year. Ascolese, in his 39th and final season as North Bergen's head coach has led the Bruins to the state finals for the first time since 1997 and has 357 career wins.

In the White Division, Hoboken's Spencer Perez was selected as the Player of the Year. The senior has excelled at both quarterback and safety to lead a young Red Wings squad to an 8-2 record and a perfect mark within the division.

Lincoln junior QB Isiah Roberts was name the division's Offensive MVP after throwing for 1,102 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first year as a starter. Roberts also rushed for 614 yards and six touchdowns for the 7-3 Lions.

Marist cornerback Troy Garland was named the Defensive MVP. Despite a tough 3-7 campaign for the Royal Knights, the four-year starter was one of the County's premier defensive backs this season.
