North 2, Group I First Round
5. Hoboken (8-1) at 4. Weequahic (6-2)
Friday, November 11 7 p.m.
Red Wings head coach Lou Taglieri knew before the season that his team would be young, but had the talent wreak havoc once it got acclimated to the varsity level.
Taglieri's prediction proved prophetic as Hoboken rebounded from an opening week loss to Memorial with eight-straight wins to enter the playoffs as Hudson County's hottest team.
The Red Wings won't be the only team entering tonight's showdown with a long winning streak. Since losing to Bayonne on Sept. 23 and falling 1-2, the host Indians have won five-straight under first-year head coach Brian Logan.
Players to Watch for Hoboken:
Donte Carter, RB/LB
This 5-foot-10, 185-pound junior has emerged as the latest top runner to break out for the Mile Square City squad. A powerful runner, Carter has been a model of consistency for the Red Wings, having scored at least one touchdown in all nine games and has eight-straight 100+ yard rushing games. For the year he's rushed for 1,084 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Spencer Perez, QB/S
As one of the few seniors for Hoboken, Perez has been the unquestioned leader this season. A dual-theat quarterback, the 6-foot-2 senior has shown a knack for the big play when the Red Wings needed it the most. In the final minutes of a 28-20 win over Lincoln, Perez through for a fourth-down touchdown and then picked off a Lion pass to seal the victory.
Players to Watch for Weequahic:
Kenneth Robinson, LB
One thing Hoboken can guarantee tonight is that it will see plenty of this play-making linebacker. The senior has been a tackling machine for Weequahic this year, making 14 stops against Verona and 12 more in a win over Glen Ridge. Against Newark Central, Robinson made 10 tackles, intercepted a pass and recovered a fubmle.
Will Robinson, QB
Robinson brings the poise and leadership at quarterback one would expect from a four-year starter. He engineered the game-winning drive against Verona, connecting with Keith Foster for a touchdown and then Justin Harrell for a two-point conversion in the 15-14 victory. Robinson was a one-man show last week vs Glen Ridge, passing for 272 yards and rushing for 112 yards.
