Many of the top football players in Hudson County will be continuing their playing careers in college next season. We have profiled a few of the high-profile announcements in recent weeks. Here are a few others who officially signed to play at the next level recently.
Wenner Nunes arrived at Kearny High School, he had never played any organized sports. Despite that lack of experience, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound offensive guard has molded himself into a standout lineman and signed to play at Lehigh. Nunes became the first Kardinal to sign a college football scholarship in more than 15 years.

“Wenner proved out what all high school coaches say,” head coach Pete Llaneza said. “Hard work pays off. He’s an example of what you can become.”
Nunes anchored the offensive line for a Kearny team which went a surprising 4-6 a season ago. Since he has only played football for such a short time, Llaneza believes Nunes is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential.
“His best football is still in front of him,” Llaneza said. “In college he will put on 30 pounds of good weight and will be tough to handle.”
Nunes’ signing wasn’t the only landmark signing in Hudson County. Tight end/defensive end Khadeem Wilson became the first football player in St. Anthony history to sign a Division 1 scholarship.
Wilson signed with Temple, making official the verbal commitment he had made to the Owls before his senior season.
