WEEHAWKEN – With one of the smallest rosters in the state, Weehawken coach Chris Johnsen knows that the margin of error for his Indians squad is slim. Yesterday’s 50-14 loss to Emerson was a reminder of just that and how much Johnson has to rely on a roster that has little depth.
“We ask a lot of our kids because we don’t have that many,” said the third-year head coach. “We’re down to 21 at this point and we don’t see anyone else coming in. We don’t have any big transfers coming in so we’ve got to deal with what we got.”
Weehawken (0-2) stayed with a stronger Emerson (2-0) team for most of the first half. Damian Corredor cut the deficit to 10-6 with a 56-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter. Down 17-6 late in the period, the Indians appeared poised to make it a one-score game heading into half. But a fumble on the Cavliers’ 21 with less than a minute left dashed those hopes.
Emerson would prove to be far too much for the undermanned Indians in the second half as they scored on all five possessions after halftime.
Joshua Owimrin hauled in touchdown passes of 69 and 34 yards in the third quarter to make it 30-6 Emerson and break the game open. The senior running back finished with 186 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in the victory.
Kris Farley rushed for a team-high 87 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Zelencic had a 42-yard touchdown to go with five extra points and a field goal in the win.
Shane Reilly threw a 69-yard touchdown on his lone pass and had a 1-yard touchdown run for the game’s first score.
Corredor was the main bright spot for Weehawken. Normally a starting running back, the standout sophomore took over at quarterback in the second half with starter J.J. Pineda limited by leg cramps. Corredor rushed for 71 yards on the Indians’ fourth-quarter scoring drive which culminated in a 34-yard touchdown. He finished with 162 yards rushing on just 12 carries and had 216 all-purpose yards in defeat.
Fellow sophomore Chris Cintron added 46 yards rushing for Weehawken.
The Indians hope to bounce back a week from today when they travel to Bogota. Despite the 0-2 start and the obstacles in front of them, Johnsen remains confident that his team can win some games this season.
“There are winnable games left,” he said. “We’re playing games against teams our size and in our situation.”

Sophomore Damian Corredor had 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
