KEARNY – Mike Giambalvo's goal in the third minute proved to be the difference for St. Peter's Prep as the Marauders advanced to the finals of the Hudson County Tournament after holding off Harrison 1-0 yesterday at Kearny High School.
Prep's Rory Duffy ripped a shot from the left side that was stopped by a diving Matthew Muchowski, but Giambalvo, a junior, pounced on the loose ball and buried home the rebound.
From there, the defense and goalie Ryan Baird did the rest as the Rutgers-bound keep made seven saves for the shutout and 11th-straight win for the second-seeded Marauders (19-1).
Muchowski made six stops for the third-seeded Blue Tide (19-3) in defeat.
St. Peter's Prep, ranked 14th in the state, advances to face fifth-seeded Union City for the county championship. The time and location for the match has yet to be determined.
Before then the Marauders will face Seton Hall Prep, ranked fourth in the state, on Tuesday in the NJSIAA Non-Public, North A semifinals at 4 p.m. at Seton Hall University. Harrison, ranked 18th in the state, will host Whippany Park in the NJSIAA North 2, Group I semifinals Tuesday at 2 p.m.
