Behind goalie Tyler Anderson and a deep offensive attack led by Almir Batista, Kearny has earned the top spot in the upcoming Hudson County Boys Soccer Tournament. The Kardinals enter Saturday’s tournament as one the area’s hottest teams, winning five straight games. Kearny, ranked 15th in the state, enters with an 8-1-1 record.
The Kardinals are hardly the only team entering the tournament on a roll. Second-seed Bayonne (7-2-1) is unbeaten in its last six games behind high-scoring forward Aboubacar Diawara and a dangerous collection of midfielders. Bothe the Kardinals and Bees will earn first-round byes.
Bayonne and Kearny are hardly the only threats to win this tournament. Defending champions Harrison enters as the third seed. Even with a virtually new core, the 18th-ranked Blue Tide are a dangerous threat.
No. 4 seed Union City and No. 5 seed St. Peter’s Prep have also had strong seasons. The Marauders (6-3) have shown they compete with anyone as evidenced by a recent win over state-ranked Columbia. No. 6 seed North Bergen is the lone team to defeat Kearny so far this season.
The first round takes place this weekend. The second round will take place on Saturday, October 16. The semifinals will be on Sunday, October 24 at Caven Point. The final will be on Saturday, October 31 at the new Red Bull Arena in Harrison.
