State playoffs start up

Andrew Romero scored the lone goal of the game for St. Peter's Prep yesterday.

St. Peter’s Prep 1, Immaculata 0

Andrew Romero’s goal in the second half proved to be the difference for the Marauders as they advanced in the NJSIAA Non-Public, North A tournament yesterday at Caven Point.

Max Miesemer assisted on the tally for seventh-seeded St. Peter’s Prep (14-6) and Mark Zatta made two saves for the shutout. With the win, the Marauders will face undefeated Seton Hall Prep squad which is ranked Number 1 in the state and fifth in the country.

Tenth-seeded Immaculata fell to 7-8-1 on the year.

Weehawken 1, Hoboken 0

Senior Leo Gomez delivered his first career goal with just three seconds left as the 11th-seeded Indians advanced in the NJSIAA North 2, Group I playoffs yesterday in Hoboken.

Weehawken (7-6-1) will travel to Harrison to face the third-seeded Blue Tide in the second round of the tournament.

The sixth-seeded Red Wings fell to 7-7 on the season.

North Arlington 2, Secaucus 1

Adam Swift made 10 saves in net for the 10th-seeded Patriots who went down in double-overtime in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group I playoffs yesterday in North Arlington.

Shawn Duda added a goal for Secaucus (7-11-1).

Tyler Krychowski had a goal and an assist for the seventh-seeded Vikings (10-7). Danny Cordiero also scored a goal and Robert Marrero made four saves in net.

Clifton 2, Memorial 1

The Tigers almost pulled of one of the state’s biggest upsets before falling in overtime of their NJSIAA North 1, Group IV match yesterday in Clifton.

Fifteenth-seeded Memorial (3-13-2) took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Diego Zuniga in the opening half. But the second-seeded Mustangs (19-1), ranked third in the state, rallied back behind two goals from Valdrin Seci, including a game-winner in overtime.

Dennis Bravo made five saves in net for Memorial while Anthony Tsouhnikas made four stops for Clifton.

Montclair 2, North Bergen 1

The sixth-seeded Bruins saw their season come to an end in penalty kicks in the first round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group IV tournament yesterday in North Bergen.

Matthew Stith, Joseph Rodriguez and Oliver Murphy all scored in the penalty kick session for 11th-seeded Montclair (8-8-1). Stith, the team’s goalie, made two stops in the shootout to seal the win. Rodriguez had the lone goal in regulation for the Mounties.

Ricardo Franco scored in regulation for North Bergen (9-10-2) and Jesus Solis made six saves in net.

Bayonne 1, Linden 0

Ahmed Bendary made five saves to post the shutout as the fourth-seeded Bees advanced in the NJSIAA North 2, Group IV tournament yesterday in Bayonne.

Patryk Dawidczyk scored the game’s lone goal for Bayonne (13-4-3) in the first half on a pass from teammate Wilfredo Alvizures. With the victory, the Bees will host fifth-seeded North Hunterdon in the quarterfinals.

Juan Maradiago made 10 saves for 13th-seeded Linden (8-9) in defeat.

Kearny 1, East Orange 0

Renato Vigo converted on a Ryan Wilson pass for the lone goal of the game as the second-seeded Kardinals advanced in the NJSIAA North 2, Group IV tournament yesterday at Harvey Field in Kearny.

Tyler Anderson made six saves for Kearny (17-2-1), ranked 15th in the state for the shutout, his second in as many days. The Kardinals will host Hunterdon Central in the second round.

Fifteenth-seeded East Orange fell to 11-5 on the year.

Bridgewater-Raritan 4, Dickinson 0

Sam Vitello scored two goals and added an assist as the top-seeded Panthers ended Dickinson’s season in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group IV playoffs yesterday in Bridgewater.

Derek Luke had a goal and two assists for Bridgewater-Raritan (16-1), ranked No. 16 in the state and Alex Kaminetzky added eight saves in the shutout.

The Rams end the season with a record of 5-13-1.

Morristown-Beard 5, Marist 0

The Royal Knights, seeded 10th were eliminated in the first round of the NJSIAA Non-Public, North B tournament yesterday in Morristown.
