Bruins, Rams advance to second round

The Bruins' Willy Cardenas scored twice against Barringer.

Steven Zamudio needed just three minutes to put the Bruins on top to stay as North Bergen cruised to an opening round victory in the North 1, Group IV playoffs yesterday in Newark.

Willy Cardenas made it 2-0 when he converted on a penalty kick in the 19th minute and would then add another goal in the second half. Oliver Garcia and Ricardo Franco also found the net for No. 9 seed North Bergen (14-6-2).

Jesus Solis made three saves in net to earn the shutout.

North Bergen will face top-seeded Morris Knolls on Friday.

The Rams scored a trio of second half goals to emerge victorious in the opening round of the North 2, Group IV tournament yesterday in Jersey City.

Maxi Garcia, Terrol Ishmael and Usman Toure delivered the goals for No. 6 seed Dickinson (15-6).

Ariel Canales made eight saves for the shutout.

Montclair 1, Kearny 0

The second-seeded Kardinals were stopped in penalty kicks by Montclair yesterday in the North 1, Group IV tournament at Kearny Stadium. No. 15 seed Montclair won the shootout session over Kearny (14-5-1) by a 3-2 margin.
