During this February's Hudson County Tournament, St. Peter's Prep guard Trevis Wyche looked right at home on the Yanitelli Center court.
Starting in the fall of 2013, the same court will be his new basketball home.
Wyche, a rising senior, decided to stay close to home as he made a verbal commitment to play at Saint Peter's University. He selected the Jersey City college over a host of low-major Division 1 offers.
"I think it's a great thing," said St. Peter's Prep coach Todd Decker. "Coach (John) Dunne and his staff do a remarkable job there so I think Trevis will continue to grow as a player, both on and off the court."
Wyche, who sat out the first 30 days of last season after transferring to St. Peter's Prep from St. Patrick, immediately established himself as one of the county's premier guards. In just 16 games, he averaged 13 points, 8.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and three steals to lead the Marauders to the title game of the Hudson County Tournament.
"Last year, having to sit out the first 30 days and having to come in with a very different team, I don't think he truly got his rhythm," said Decker, adding that he thinks Wyche is only scratching the surface of his potential. "He's able to get in the lane at will. His biggest attribute is that he's tough. He's a tough kid. He likes playing defense, he likes setting up guys for good shots, he enjoys making the extra pass."
Wyche is one of four returning starters for a Prep team, which brings back five of their top seven scorers from last season's 19-7 squad.
