St. Peter’s Prep has had plenty of big wins in their transformation to one of the state’s premier teams. But none were bigger than the Maruaders’ stunning 84-81 victory over nationally-ranked Oak Hill Academy in last night’s PrimeTime Shootout in Trenton.
“This is the biggest win in the history of St. Peter’s Prep basketball on any level,” head coach Mike Kelly said. “I just can’t imagine that St. Peter’s Prep has been able. This was just a monumental win.”
Trailing 71-69 with 3:21 left in the game, St. Peter’s Prep (16-3) hit 10 consecutive free throws as part of a 10-1 Marauder run to pull away.
Ronald Roberts tied the game at 71-all with two from the charity stripe and big man Keith Lumpkin put Prep on top to stay with his free throws that made it 73-72 with 2:07 left to play.
In total, the Marauders made 15-of-16 shots from the line in the final 3:21 of the game. Myles Davis and Kevin Walker combined to go 10-for-10 during that stretch as Prep avenged the foul-shooting struggles which haunted them in a loss earlier in the season to St. Anthony.
According to Kelly, “This was a complete game for us, especially down the stretch.
“Our guys had to make a choice and they stepped up and played a complete game.”
Kelly and the Marauders would need every one of those foul shots to hold off the Warriors and star guard Doron Lamb.
The 6-foot-4 McDonalds All-American single-handedly kept Oak Hill, ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Super 25, in the game. Lamb buried a trio of 3-pointers in the game’s final 17.5 seconds to finish with 49 points, the second highest total in the tournament’s history.
“Down the stretch, Doran Lamb’s going off and we were able to just keep playing back,” said Kelly.
Lamb’s final trifecta made it 83-81 St. Peter’s Prep with just 1.4 seconds left in the game.
St. John’s-bound forward Ronald Roberts converted on one-of-two from the foul line with 0.6 seconds left on the clock as the Warriors were unable to get off a game-tying shot attempt before the final buzzer.
Roberts had 23 points and more than a dozen rebounds in a huge effort.
“He played like a Big East player tonight,” Kelly said.
Davis was unconscious from beyond the arc, hitting eight 3-pointers in the game to tie a PrimeTime Shootout record. Davis finished with 33 points.
Walker added 12 points as the Marauders finally cleared that hurdle against one of the nation’s elite teams after falling just short in previous attempts this season against St. Anthony, Paterson Catholic and Christ the King.
“For us it’s a lot of lessons (from those earlier losses) coming together and we needed that to happen to have a chance to beat a team like that,” Kelly said.
“I’m hoping the lessons now have been driven home with a win instead of a loss. You always learn more from a positive than a negative.”
