Bayonne 5, Union City 4
One out away from elimination, top-seeded Bayonne rallied for two runs and stun Union City in the quarterfinals of the Ed Ford Memorial Tournament at Veterans Stadium in Bayonne.
Joel Abreu singled home Justin Guthrie to tie the game up for the Bees (21-5). After a single and walk loaded the bases, Liam Constantine's single scored Abreu for the winning run.
Jared Ensmenger and Charles Castellano had RBI hits for Bayonne and Dave Jakubowski struck out eight in the complete game victory. Jakubowski allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks.
Robert Hererra hit a two-run inside the park homer for eighth-seeded Union City (8-15) in the first inning. Sergio Delgado added a RBI in defeat.
Bayonne advances to face Marist in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Marist 4, Harrison 2
Senior Danny Mirabel hit a two-run walkoff home run as fourth-seeded Marist advanced in the Ed Ford Memorial Tournament in Bayonne
Matt Littrell picked up the win for the Royal Knights (17-5), going seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. The sophomore struck out nine. Steve Tsugranes was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Marist advances to face top-seeded Bayonne in Wednesday's semifinals. Twelfth-seeded Harrison falls to 12-9 on the season.
Weehawken 2, North Bergen 1
Sal Mendez struck out nine batters in a complete game effort as 11th-seeded Weehawken got the upset in the quarterfinals of the Ed Ford Memorial Tournament at 64th Street Field in North Bergen.
Mendez, a junior left-hander, escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth to protect the one-run lead for the Indians (14-9). Dante Cieri broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with a double to leftfield which plated senior J.J. Pineda. Miguel Montilla added a two-out single to make it 2-0.
Marco Hernandez was the tough luck losing pitcher for third-seeded North Bergen (15-6).
Weehawken advances to face second-seeded St. Peter's Prep in the semifinals at Lincoln Park in Jersey City on Wednesday.
St. Peter's Prep 5, Hudson Catholic 4
Jack McNulty's two-run triple in the second inning gave St. Peter's Prep a lead it would not relinquish as it held off Hudson Catholic in the quarterfinals of the Ed Ford Memorial Tournament at Caven Point.
Matt Halchak singled in a run for the second-seeded Marauders (16-8) and T.J. Ward capped off the five-run second inning with a two-run single. Ryan O'Connor started for Prep and Mike Doran came in to pick up the save.
Tenth-seeded Hudson Catholic (11-11) had a two-run single from Nick Swift.
With the victory, St. Peter's Prep will host 11th-seeded Weehawken in the semifinals at Lincoln Park on Wednesday.
