Midway through their team's convincing 70-48 win over St. Joseph (Metuchen), the Plainfield fans made it clear what they were looking for next with chants of "We want St. Ant's!" echoing through the Rutgers Athletic Center on Friday night.

This talented Plainfield squad and its loyal supporters will get their wish on tonight as St. Anthony squares off with Plainfield for the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title at the Izod Center. The game is a rematch of last year's TOC championship game (a 61-49 St. Anthony win) and the fourth time these two Garden State powers will square off in two seasons. Read More

PISCATAWAY – St. Anthony guards Josh Brown and Hallice Cooke looked at each other in shock when they heard head coach Bob Hurley proclaim this season's Friars team the best defensive group he's had in his Hall of Fame career.

The statement elicited a stream of gasps of disbelief and smiles throughout the media room at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Despite the reaction from within the room, it would have been hard for anyone to argue after the Friars' latest defensive clinic. This one, a 67-39 dismantling of Gill St. Bernard's in the NJSIAA Non-Public B championship, might have been the most impressive one of them all. Read More

NEWARK – Tom Best wasn’t overcome with the feeling of sadness coming off the court, customary of this time of the year. His Lincoln team had just seen its season come an end, but for the 14-year head coach and his team, it served as a time of reflection – and celebration, for what had been one of the most successful years in the program’s history.

“I just want to tell them how I’m so proud of them,” said Best minutes after Lincoln’s 72-32 loss to Shabazz in the North 2, Group II title game. “We got some celebrating to do. We didn’t get a chance to celebrate.” Read More

JERSEY CITY – There was a changing of the guard for boys and girls basketball in Hudson County last night.

Few people gave the Lincoln girls team much of a chance after getting blown out by 27 points against Bayonne in the regular season. But the sequel had a much different ending as the Lions recovered from an early deficit to stun the Bees 59-51 and end Bayonne's quest for a fourth-straight title.

Bayonne's reign wasn't the only streak to end. The four-year title run of St. Peter's Prep came to an end as Hudson Catholic won its first county title since 1975 with a 67-54 win over the Marauders. The red-hot Hawks led from the start and never looked back as they won their 19th-straight game.

The time has come for Hudson County’s version of Super Saturday as the boys and girls basketball champions will be crowned today at Saint Peter’s College.

In the opener at 5:30 p.m., Bayonne and the senior duo Lisa Rovatsos and Tara Flynn go for a fourth-straight title. But Lincoln and offensive force Breana Bey are looking to ruin the streak and get some revenge for a rough loss when they met in January.

In the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. it will be the much-anticipated rematch between Jersey City powers St. Peter's Prep and Hudson Catholic. Prep is going for a fifth-straight title, but an emerging Hudson Catholic looks to take over as No. 1 in the HCIAL and has won 18-straight games.

Below you will find complete previews of both games as we look into the key players and matchups in today’s double-header.

JERSEY CITY – In a season where Breana Bey has averaged 24 points per game, you would think there'd be little left she could do to surprise her Lincoln teammates. But in the fourth quarter of the Lions' biggest game of the season, the junior forward would do just that.

Bey, one of the area's top scorers around the basket, hit a few critical mid-range shots in a 10-point fourth quarter to help lead Lincoln back from a 13-point deficit to defeat Secaucus 47-46 in the semifinals of the Hudson County Tournament last night at the Yanitelli Center.

Such pizzazz is rarely seen by these Patriots, but the exchange along with McClure's returning bounce pass to Lennon for an easy layup was one of many example that sixth-seeded Secaucus has plenty of substance to go with the style.

JERSEY CITY – The scoreboard might have flashed a tie score, but for the St. Peter's Prep the end result was one that had become all too familiar.

For the third-straight year the Marauders were left to watch rival Bergen Catholic celebrate inside their own gym as the Oradell school knocked Prep out of the state playoffs. This time  it was tied at 27-all after 14 matches sending both coaches and the officials to the rule book. BAYONNE – After a recent loss, a not-so subtle reminder was sent to Rodney Wilson courtesy of head coach Mickell Taylor, he needed be more aggressive on the offensive end. Bayonne's three-year starter and senior captain not only took the message to heart, but responded with his best game of the season.

The 2011 high school football season in Hudson County was certainly one to remember. North Bergen became the first Hudson County team since 2005 with a miraculous 14-13 win over Montclair on the game's final play to send head coach Vincent Ascolese into retirement with one last state championship.

The Bruins' title wasn't the only big story as Bayonne and Memorial experienced significant turnarounds, making the playoffs after long droughts. The year also saw another huge season from Hoboken and Union City and the continuation of St. Peter's Prep's in-county winning streak.

This year's edition of the All-County Team features just three returning members highlighted by All-State linebacker Vin Ascolese, the only three-time recipient.

KEARNY – Facing a physical Union City defense, Andrew Romero knew it’d be imperative to take advantage of any scoring opportunities coming his way. On his first chance to come his way, Romero did just that.

Romero’s goal just 71 seconds into the game proved to be the difference for St. Peter’s Prep as it won its first Hudson County championship with a 2-0 victory last night at Kearny High School. Read More

HARRISON – Giving up a game-tying goal in the last moments before halftime like the one Whippany Park's Tyler Raff scored might have triggered the emotional letdown capable of sinking a season for some teams. For Harrison, it served as the wakeup call it sorely needed.

The Blue Tide would respond with a pair of second half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Whippany Park in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North 2, Group I playoffs. Read More

HARRISON – Even with her scoring totals down from the previous three seasons, Kearny's Mercedes Lois hasn't been hesitant to keep firing shots when the opportunity arises.

WEST NEW YORK – Malcolm Robinson could hear the playful ribbing from his teammates and assistant coach Jammal Lord before he could even reach the Bayonne sideline. For the second time of the game, a long Robinson run has stalled just one yard short of the end zone.

“I was already getting it on the sidelines from the coaches and the players,” said Robinson with a smile. “But hey, what can you say. I love those guys and they're the reason I can do what I do.” Read More

JERSEY CITY – During the course of its impressive regular season, St. Peter's Prep gradually started to attract attention from beyond their Hudson County confines. In their state tournament debut, the Marauders sent a not so subtle reminder to the rest of the state that they are a team to be reckoned with.

Playing in what might have been its best performance on the season, St. Peter's Prep dominated  Don Bosco Prep 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Non-Public, North A tournament, looking every bit the part of a title contender in the process. Read More

KEARNY – Kearny head coach Billy Galka said he never looked at the record of his team's first round opponent. He knew that Memorial would provide a challenge much greater than its three wins or No. 16 seed would indicate upon first glance.

The top-seeded Kardinals knew that it was a team which required their complete attention and effort in order to advance and past the West New York school for a third time this season. Read More

JERSEY CITY – When Bayonne's Matt Mullin plowed through the line midway through the fourth quarter he saw more than just yards of open field in front of him. For him and his teammates it was the sight of the state playoffs for the first time after years of crushing defeats.

Mullin's 31-yard touchdown run with 5:53 left in the game allowed the Bees to punch their ticket to the state playoffs for the first time since 2007 as they defeated St. Anthony 19-7 last night at Caven Point.

JERSEY CITY – It didn't take long for any concerns Secaucus may have had about nerves from its young team in a championship match environment to be put to rest.

Even with the presence of four freshmen in the lineup, the Patriots showed they were still the gold standard of girls volleyball in Hudson County. They scored seven of the first eight points and rode that early momentum to their third-straight county championship in a 25-17, 25-19 win over Bayonne last night at Saint Peter's College. Read More

WEST NEW YORK – Memorial head coach Michael Leibovitz doesn't want to think about the challenge that lies ahead with replacing standout midfielder Karla Calderon.

One only needs to look at the stat sheet and Calderon's stranglehold on the school record book to see just how valuable she has been for four seasons and how irreplaceable she will be, when she graduates this spring. Read More

SECAUCUS – Moments after it's second gut-wrenching loss in as many weeks, the message from within Secaucus' postgame huddle was clear - they were not going to fall apart from this, a point senior linebacker Tom Kessler stressed to his teammates of by remind them "no matter what, we're still a family."

Kessler and the rest of the Patriots remain confident of better days ahead, but that was of little solace as Secaucus fell just short in its 21-20 showdown with Rutherford last night at Kane Stadium. Read More
