By Jason Bernstein
Editorial Director

The balls have been put away and the lights have been turned off on a 2009-2010 high school basketball season in Hudson County that certainly wasn't lacking in memorable moments.

This season saw legendary head coach Bob Hurley finally earn basketball's highest honor as he was elected to the Hall of Fame. We saw a true Hudson County Tournament for the first time with the Bayonne girls and St. Peter's Prep emerging victorious. The championships wouldn't stop there as Jersey City was the capital of New Jersey high school basketball for one evening in March as the Marauders and Friars took home sectional titles on the same night in Piscataway.

But the most memorable on-court moment didn't take place on the campus of Rutgers, but in the Jersey City Armory as St. Peter's Prep and St. Anthony engaged in a matchup, few will forget. The much-anticipated showdown lived up to the considerable hype as the Friars made a stunning late comeback before winning the instant classic in overtime.

As we say farewell to the 2009-2010 season, here are our selections for Hudson County Varsity's First Annual All-County Team.

BAYONNE – After an up-and-down first season as St. Dominic Academy’s starting pitcher, Stephanie Bolger knew that location and consistency were two areas she would have to improve at to take her game to the next level.

Yesterday was an example of just what the junior is capable of doing in the circle. Bolger was downright dominant at times, striking out 12 batters to help lead the Blue Devils past Bayonne 8-1 yesterday at Gorman Field. Read More

JERSEY CITY – For many high school pitchers, having complete command and confidence in one off-speed pitch is a challenge. Hudson Catholic right-hander Danny Perez isn't like most at this level - he has command of two.

Despite a lack of an over-powering fastball in his arsenal, Perez kept the County Prep off-balance with a devastating changeup-curveball combination in a 7-3 victory yesterday at Lincoln Park. Read More

JERSEY CITY – For Marc Hanna and Phil McGovern their chemistry goes beyond your typical pitcher-catcher relationship. It’s one that has grown from having similar personalities and driving each other to school each morning for more than a year.

That chemistry was on full display as the two carpool mates were the difference as St. Peter’s Prep opened their season on a winning note, knocking off St. Mary’s 7-2 in a matchup of last season’s HCIAA Coviello and Seglio champions yesterday at Caven Point.

NORTH BERGEN – For the Bruins softball team, this is an opportunity that rarely comes along. Returning eight starters is a luxury any coach would love to have. With eight starters coming back from a team which went 23-4 a year ago, head coach Tom Eagleson was hard-pressed to remember having a team with this combination of talent and experience.

“It’s been a long time since we only lost one (starter),” he said. “Usually we lose three or four. Only (losing) one starter this year, is going to be nice.” Read More

PISCATAWAY - In what has already been an impressive season for St. Anthony and St. Peter's Prep you can now add another accomplishment to their already impressive resumes - sectional champions.

One year after being blown out at home by Seton Hall Prep in the semifinals, the Marauders extracted some revenge against their Essex County rival. After struggling to find a consistency on the offensive end for the first three quarters, St. Peter’s Prep broke through in the fourth behind a pair of Stephon Whyatt 3-pointers to earn a 64-54 win in the NJSIAA Non-Public, North A final. Winning championships is nothing new for the Friars, but few might be as unexpected as this one. JERSEY CITY – Before the season began, St. Anthony and head coach Bob Hurley envisioned plenty of games where their size advantage would allow them to dominate opponents in the paint and on the glass.

Injuries and ineligibility dashed those plans for most of the season. But last night the Friars’ duo of Devon Collier and Derrick Williams showed why they are amongst the state’s best big men in a 58-30 victory over Gill St. Bernard’s in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Non-Public, North B tournament last night at the CERC.
