KEARNY – Kearny's Ashleigh Amadeo has had some huge performances in the circle before, Saturday had a different feeling to it. For six-plus innings, Amadeo wasn't just dominant, she was perfect.

Laurie successfully navigated her way out of trouble and gave her St. Dominic team a win it desperately needed, a 4-3 victory over Bayonne yesterday at Lincoln Park. The Blue Devils (5-14) had lost four-straight games and 11 of their last 12. Read More

BAYONNE –Kris Kucza knows that the records and rankings are irrelevant when it comes to matchups with arch-rival St. Peter’s Prep. A three-year veteran of the rivalry, the Bayone outside hitter knows the twice (and sometimes three or four) a year showdowns will push both teams to their limits.

After three months of drama, exciting plays, standout performances and a shattered backboard, the 2011-2012 high school basketball season in Hudson County has come to a close.

This season saw St. Anthony finish undefeated for the second-straight season, ending with a Tournament of Champions win over Plainfield. It also marked the last chapter in the remarkable career of UCLA-bound Kyle Anderson, who was a perfect 65-0 in the Friars' maroon and gold and was selected as a McDonald's All-American.

While Anderson and St. Anthony continued their reign at the top, there was a changing of the guard throughout the county. Hudson Catholic won its first Hudson County Tournament, ending a four-year reign of in-city rival St. Peter's Prep. On the girls side, Lincoln stunned three-time defending champion Bayonne to win the Hudson County Tournament.

As we say farewell to the season, here are our selections for Hudson County Varsity's Third Annual All-County Team.

EAST RUTHERFORD – Roughly 20 minutes after winning their second-straight Tournament of Champions title, St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley decided to deliver a playful verbal jab to star pupil Kyle Anderson, asking the 6-foot-9 All-American about the most recent and most well known loss in his stellar high school career.

Anderson and everyone else inside the media room at IZOD Center knew the answer - the same St. Anthony team he has starred for the past two seasons. Anderson was with Paterson Catholic on that March 2010 night at Rutgers, playing for a Non-Public, North B title. Paterson Catholic would close a couple months later, prompting Anderson to transfer the Friars and become arguably the greatest player in the history of the Jersey City school. Read More

JERSEY CITY – St. Anthony had rolled to 26-straight wins during the regular season. But now that the calendar has turned to March and the state playoffs have arrived, there’s an added importance, something made quite clear from the practices Bob Hurley put his Friars through in recent days.

“It was two of the hardest practices I’ve ever been through at St. Anthony,” forward Kyle Anderson said about the Monday and Tuesday sessions. “I think those really helped us.” Read More

SECAUCUS – With little to no size on its roster Secaucus has had to rely heavily upon perimeter shooting and capitalizing off turnovers on offense this season. The formula worked to the tune of 23 wins.

HARRISON – When Harrison’s Briana O’Donnell was asked about her eight-point outburst in the final minutes of the third quarter, the senior forward was unaware of just how many points she had scored in the game-changing stretch.

That short memory and inability to be fazed by the pressure of state playoff basketball, proved critical as the Blue Tide overcame some nerves and bouts of inconsistency to knock off North 13th Street Tech 44-28 in the opening round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group I tournament. Read More

JERSEY CITY – There was a changing of the guard for boys and girls basketball in Hudson County last night.

Few people gave the Lincoln girls team much of a chance after getting blown out by 27 points against Bayonne in the regular season. But the sequel had a much different ending as the Lions recovered from an early deficit to stun the Bees 59-51 and end Bayonne's quest for a fourth-straight title.

Bayonne's reign wasn't the only streak to end. The four-year title run of St. Peter's Prep came to an end as Hudson Catholic won its first county title since 1975 with a 67-54 win over the Marauders. The red-hot Hawks led from the start and never looked back as they won their 19th-straight game.

The time has come for Hudson County’s version of Super Saturday as the boys and girls basketball champions will be crowned today at Saint Peter’s College.

In the opener at 5:30 p.m., Bayonne and the senior duo Lisa Rovatsos and Tara Flynn go for a fourth-straight title. But Lincoln and offensive force Breana Bey are looking to ruin the streak and get some revenge for a rough loss when they met in January.

In the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. it will be the much-anticipated rematch between Jersey City powers St. Peter's Prep and Hudson Catholic. Prep is going for a fifth-straight title, but an emerging Hudson Catholic looks to take over as No. 1 in the HCIAL and has won 18-straight games.

Below you will find complete previews of both games as we look into the key players and matchups in today’s double-header.

JERSEY CITY – In a season where Breana Bey has averaged 24 points per game, you would think there'd be little left she could do to surprise her Lincoln teammates. But in the fourth quarter of the Lions' biggest game of the season, the junior forward would do just that.

Bey, one of the area's top scorers around the basket, hit a few critical mid-range shots in a 10-point fourth quarter to help lead Lincoln back from a 13-point deficit to defeat Secaucus 47-46 in the semifinals of the Hudson County Tournament last night at the Yanitelli Center.

SECAUCUS – It was a rare example of flash from Secaucus when Andie Lennon delivered a no-look pass to teammate Julia McClure midway through the third quarter of their Hudson County Tournament opener. Such pizzazz is rarely seen by these Patriots, but the exchange along with McClure's returning bounce pass to Lennon for an easy layup was one of many example that sixth-seeded Secaucus has plenty of substance to go with the style.

JERSEY CITY – The scoreboard might have flashed a tie score, but for the St. Peter's Prep the end result was one that had become all too familiar.

For the third-straight year the Marauders were left to watch rival Bergen Catholic celebrate inside their own gym as the Oradell school knocked Prep out of the state playoffs. This time  it was tied at 27-all after 14 matches sending both coaches and the officials to the rule book. The fifth critera - most pins, went in Bergen Catholic's  favor as Johnny Sebastian's pin at 160, was the lone fall of the dual, breaking the deadlock and awarding the NJSIAA Non-Public, North A title to the visiting Crusaders. SECAUCUS – Four wrestlers from Hudson County took home individual gold during yesterday's Patriot Invitational at Secaucus High School.

Bayonne's tandem of Andro Moussad and Junior Aldano each took home first place. Mossaud pinned Princeton's Landis Hackett in 208 to take the 145-pound title. Aldano defeated Princeton's David Kinges by decision to win the championship at 152 pounds. Read More

BAYONNE – Stewart Lemus would be the first to admit that his final shot in overtime wasn't one of his best ones on the night. When it hits the back of the net though, the lack of beauty of the goal is irrelevant.

Lemus' goal under the left arm of Edison's Shane Bobik left everyone at the Korpi Ice Rink, including himself, in stunned disbelief as it sent the Bees to a 4-3 overtime win in the opening round of the Bayonne Holiday Tournament. Read More

As Alice De Fazio rattles off the names of the teams scheduled to participate in the Christmas tournament Marist will be hosting there is a sense of concern and pride about the list.

De Fazio knows that it will be an up-hill battle for her Royal Knights this week with these potential opponents. But that challenge has always been a part of the legacy of the tournament, now named after her late husband Bill, created during his long career at Marist. It is a legacy that Alice, the new head coach at Marist is looking to continue at the recently renamed "Bill De Fazio Challenge" which starts this afternoon. Read More

JERSEY CITY – On the surface it would seem that standing at only 5-foot-9 and giving up six or seven inches to his opponents would be a huge disadvantage for St. Peter's Prep wrestler Ryan Medina. Instead, the Marauders' senior heavyweight feels the opposite is true.

"I feel like I'm at the advantage," Medina said. "They have to come down to my level and I feel like I'm as tough as any heavyweight and I feel confident in the way my team trains me." Read More

BAYONNE – Even with his team up by 10 at the halftime intermission, Bayonne head coach James Turner made it clear to his team they could easily keep this a competitive contest or put this game away for good.

It didn't take long to figure out which path the Bees decided to follow. Read More

The 2011 high school football season in Hudson County was certainly one to remember. North Bergen became the first Hudson County team since 2005 with a miraculous 14-13 win over Montclair on the game's final play to send head coach Vincent Ascolese into retirement with one last state championship.

The Bruins' title wasn't the only big story as Bayonne and Memorial experienced significant turnarounds, making the playoffs after long droughts. The year also saw another huge season from Hoboken and Union City and the continuation of St. Peter's Prep's in-county winning streak.

This year's edition of the All-County Team features just three returning members highlighted by All-State linebacker Vin Ascolese, the only three-time recipient.

Below are the members of Hudson County Varsity's Third Annual All-County Team. Read More

WEST ORANGE – When it comes to opponents on the court, Jerome Frink has a long memory.

Twenty-one months and 34 varsity games have passed since Frink and St. Anthony last saw Trenton Catholic, but time - and a national championship - has done little ease the 6-foot-6 forward's need for revenge as he put up 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Friars to a 53-33 win yesterday at the Hoop Group Tip-Off at West Orange High School.
