NORTH BERGEN – Last year's North Bergen playoff run read like a Hollywood movie script.

Under retiring head coach Vincent Ascolese and a physical defense led by his grandson, the Bruins battled out a pair of overtime victories before posting one of the biggest upsets in recent memory as North Bergen stunned Montclair 14-13 on a touchdown from Sergio Rodriguez to Debray Tavarez as time expired. KEARNY – Pete Llaneza understands the learning curve that comes with his Triple Option offense and Odd Stack defense systems. But as Llaneza's Kearny squad enters its third season in the schemes,  the head coach is starting to see the lessons and work start to pay off.

"I think we're now starting to see the work of the first two seasons, the work being done in the offseason and the weight room starting to pay some dividends," Llaneza said. "We have a lot of guys who got a lot of experience last year and in the previous year on both sides of the ball. I think this year, in comparison to the previous two years, we're light years ahead of where we were." Read More

With the graduation of more than 17 seniors and a roster comprised almost entirely of new faces, coach Oscar Guerrero knows he has little choice, but to start over with a young, sophomore and junior heavy group.

"We had a good group of kids last year, kids that we worked with for the past two years, that definitely helped set the foundation here," Guerrero said. "But we're excited about these young kids here. They're really hungry, they're eager. They've gone out here everyday and the kids are really going after. These kids really want to learn." Read More

WEEHAWKEN – Hoboken's Abe Groomes was without his control and on the brink of disaster. Four-straight hitters had reached base in the second inning and with the bases loaded, one out and the heart of Weehawken's lineup looming, a big inning seemed imminent.

Instead, the Hoboken lefty regained enough of composure and control to turn what was destined to be a short outing into a 3-2 complete game victory at Ferullo Stadium. Read More

JERSEY CITY– If there was any doubt to how vital Natalia Estremera is to McNair's success this season, longtime head coach Vahhon McCullers made it quite clear how important the senior standout is both on and off the field.

"I told her it's her team," said McCullers following the Cougars' 17-0 victory over Lincoln. "It's only going to go as far as she takes them. (Her teammates) respond to her very well. She takes on leadership the way you want a leader to. Read More

HARRISON – Victor Narvaez understands why he may be overlooked both literally and figuratively on the court. On a Harrison team with an array of 6-foot-2 and taller options, it is Narvaez who is self-confessed "5-foot-4 at most," who is the guy who makes the Blue Tide offense run.

It may not have been flashy, but Narvaez, a three-year starter at setter had 24 assists and six digs to help lead Harrison to a 25-15, 25-17 victory over McNair. Read More

After three months of drama, exciting plays, standout performances and a shattered backboard, the 2011-2012 high school basketball season in Hudson County has come to a close.

This season saw St. Anthony finish undefeated for the second-straight season, ending with a Tournament of Champions win over Plainfield. It also marked the last chapter in the remarkable career of UCLA-bound Kyle Anderson, who was a perfect 65-0 in the Friars' maroon and gold and was selected as a McDonald's All-American.

While Anderson and St. Anthony continued their reign at the top, there was a changing of the guard throughout the county. Hudson Catholic won its first Hudson County Tournament, ending a four-year reign of in-city rival St. Peter's Prep. On the girls side, Lincoln stunned three-time defending champion Bayonne to win the Hudson County Tournament.

As we say farewell to the season, here are our selections for Hudson County Varsity's Third Annual All-County Team.

EAST RUTHERFORD – Roughly 20 minutes after winning their second-straight Tournament of Champions title, St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley decided to deliver a playful verbal jab to star pupil Kyle Anderson, asking the 6-foot-9 All-American about the most recent and most well known loss in his stellar high school career.

Anderson and everyone else inside the media room at IZOD Center knew the answer - the same St. Anthony team he has starred for the past two seasons. Anderson was with Paterson Catholic on that March 2010 night at Rutgers, playing for a Non-Public, North B title. Paterson Catholic would close a couple months later, prompting Anderson to transfer the Friars and become arguably the greatest player in the history of the Jersey City school. Read More

EAST RUTHERFORD – Leaving the IZOD Center with the Tournament of Champions trophy is something Kyle Anderson and Jerome Frink have been accustomed to. But as they walked off the court together as teammates for the final time with the championship trophy in hand, they did it having accomplished something no other St. Anthony players could stake claim to over the storied history of the program.

Behind the play of their two senior captains, the Friars put the finishing touches on a second-straight undefeated season, holding off Plainfield 66-62. Read More
